The RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) will next meet up on Monday, 16th February, and the guest speaker – who will be visiting the group in person – will be Colin Hoad.
Colin runs a YouTube channel, which focuses on Acorn-centric retro content, particularly related to the BBC Micro, and includes retrospectives and reviews of games for the 8-bit systems, features on events he has visited such as the 2024 RISC OS London Show (unfortunately, Colin couldn’t make it to the 2025 event), and he even forced himself to suffer some truly awful games for his 2025 Advent of Beeb Games.
He also has a growing collection of handheld computers from Acorn, Psion, and others – of which you might see the occasional mention on his channel.
Colin will discuss how makes his videos, covering what inspires him to choose a particular topic, and the research that goes into it – and for those attending the meeting in person, he will be bringing along a selection of his handhelds for people to break play with.
The meeting will be a hybrid one, with some people attending in person for the best experience, and some attending online. To attend in person, you need to head to:
The Duke of Sussex
(Upstairs in the Chichester or Petworth Room)
23 Baylis Road,
London,
SE1 7AY.
There are directions to the venue on the ROUGOL website, and you can expect to find members lurking from around 6:30pm. The meeting proper will commence from around 7:45pm.
To join online using Zoom you’ll need a device that can run the software, along with the log-in credentials. These remain the same as previous meetings, so if you’ve already joined one you should have them, but if not you can get them by contacting ROUGOL. The Zoom meeting should be open for people to join from around 7:30pm.
Looking ahead
Next month’s meeting, on 16th March, will feature Matt Godbolt, who these days resides in Chicago but will be visiting London and taking the opportunity to visit ROUGOL in the pub. He’ll be talking about jsbeeb, his Javascript BBC Micro emulator, and the Compiler Explorer website.
